A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday while walking on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Irvine, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman was walking on the shoulder, then drifted into the right lane and then another lane over before she was struck by a box truck, according to CHP Officer Tino Olivera.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene just after 6 a.m. near Laguna Canyon Road, Olivera said.

It’s unclear why she was walking on the freeway, but the driver apparently did not see her because “the fog was pretty thick,” Olivera said.

The woman was not carrying any identification, he said, and was not immediately identified.
