A 22-year-old Buena Park man is suspected of driving while impaired and causing a collision that resulted in the hospitalization of his passenger and a pedestrian, who was critically injured, Newport Beach police reported Monday.

Joshua Daniel Baird was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence following the crash that occurred just after 4:45 p.m. Sunday on West Coast Highway, east of 61st Street, according to Newport Beach police Lt. Jay Short.

Baird was behind the wheel of a 2000 Toyota Celica that veered onto the sidewalk of West Coast Highway, slamming into a 37-year-old jogger, Short said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was rushed to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical condition, Short said. A passenger in Baird’s vehicle also sustained serious injuries, but they were not considered life-threatening, Short said.

Baird was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics, Short said.

Anyone with information about the collision was asked to call Detective Chris Burns at (949) 644-3747.
