A man suspected in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian in Santa Ana surrendered to police and was booked, police said.
Roberto Mateo Garcia, 54, of Santa Ana, walked into city police headquarters accompanied by relatives about 10 a.m., Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
He was later booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing a death, Bertagna said.
The pedestrian was struck about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near Warner Avenue and Lowell Street, Bertagna said. Police were still trying to determine the identity of the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Bertagna said.
When police worked up an identity of the suspect they went to his last known address where he lived with his brother, Bertagna said.
The brother later tracked down Garcia and persuaded him to turn himself in, Bertagna said.
Police said the victim was struck by a white, two-door 2003 Ford Explorer Sport with license number 5WHF583. Investigators earlier identified Garcia as a suspect and asked for the public’s help finding him.
