Health officials Sunday were trying to figure out why five employees of an Irvine restaurant were hit by nausea, dizziness and stomach cramps and had to be hospitalized for symptoms of food poisoning.

Firefighters responded at 1:17 p.m. Saturday to a restaurant in a mall in the 2750 block of Alton Parkway, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

The employees had nausea, dizziness and stomach cramps that were “not life-threatening,” Kurtz said.

An OCFA hazardous materials team checked the restaurant and determined the symptoms were not due to exposure to hazardous materials, he said.

Orange County health inspectors were working to determine the cause of the food poisoning, Kurtz said.
