The Coroner’s Office Sunday publicly named a 20-year-old motorist who was killed in a crash when a SUV crashed into a power pole in Garden Grove and flipped over, landing on its roof.

The motorist was identified as Jose Fernandez, of Garden Grove, according to the coroner’s office. Another person inside was partially ejected but had stable life signs after the crash, and was expected to survive.

A silver 2017 Toyota SUV was going north on West Street, approaching Chapman Avenue, when it struck and sheared off a power pole, said Traffic Investigator Royce Wimmer of the Garden Grove Police Department.

The Toyota then flipped over and came to a stop on its roof in the number two lane of northbound West Street, Wimmer said.

Police and firefighters were dispatched at 3:17 a.m. Saturday, and found Fernandez trapped inside the Toyota, he said.

Paramedics rushed both people to UCI Medical Center where Fernandez died from his injuries.

The passenger was described as a man in his 20s, according to sources at the crash scene.

The Garden Grove Police Department asked anyone who saw the crash to call them at (714) 741-5230.
