A 23-year-old man was in custody Saturday for allegedly driving his vehicle on purpose into a number of cars stopped for a red light at a Garden Grove intersection and then running away from the chaotic scene in which one woman was injured.

Eight vehicles were involved in the crash.

There was no word from authorities of why they believe the high-speed collision had been intentional.

Garden Grove police and firefighters responded to  the crash at 9:55 p.m. Friday at Lampson Avenue, east of Harbor Boulevard, involving five occupied vehicles, two parked vehicles, and the suspect’s vehicle.

Witnesses told police the five occupied vehicles were stopped at a red light in the westbound lanes of Lampson Avenue, east of Harbor Boulevard.

The suspect’s vehicle approached the intersection from the east, traveling at a high rate of speed when it drove into the waiting vehicles, causing a chain reaction collision, according to Lt. Carl Whitney. The suspect’s vehicle came to a stop when it hit several parked vehicles on the north curb of Lampson.

Witnesses helped the suspect out of his vehicle before he fled as police arrived.

A 34-year-old female driver was transported to a hospital and will be treated for facial injuries and a broken collarbone, but she is in stable condition, police said.

Several hours later, the Garden Grove Police Department received calls from the suspect’s family members who live nearby, according to Whitney. The suspect fled to the residence and told relatives he had been involved in the collision and had run away.

Police responded to the residence and obtained statements that indicated the suspect intentionally rammed the victim’s vehicles.

The suspect was not exhibiting signs and symptoms of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to police.

He was booked into Orange County Jail. His name was not released, but he is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and 115 pounds.

Witnesses are asked to call the Garden Grove Crimes against Person Unit at (714) 741-5800.
