A fire severely damaged a three-story home Tuesday in unincorporated Cowan Heights near Orange, displacing two people.

The non-injury fire was reported shortly after 1 a.m. in the 10200 block of Cowan Heights Drive, said Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The home’s two residents evacuated the home of their own volition and about 36 firefighters tore away at the roof and walls of the cliffhanger-style home — with a garage on the top level and two sub levels underneath it — to discover the fire had been burning almost entirely in the dry wall, Kurtz said. The fire was knocked down about an hour later.

The cause was being investigated and the home’s residents were staying with neighbors, Kurtz said.
