A portion of the San Diego (405) Freeway in Fountain Valley will be closed overnight Saturday night as part of a freeway widening project.

The freeway will be closed from 11 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday between Brookhurst and Magnolia streets to accommodate the demolition of the Slater Avenue bridge. The closure will be repeated the following weekend.

The Slater Avenue bridge is the second of about 18 bridges to be built, widened or replaced as part of the freeway widening. Last month, a stretch of the freeway was closed for the McFadden Avenue bridge demolition.

During this weekend’s closure, northbound traffic will be diverted onto Brookhurst Street, then west on Warner Avenue and back onto the freeway. Southbound motorists will be detoured to Magnolia Street, then east on Talbert Avenue and back to the freeway.

More partial freeway closures are being planned during the weeks of Oct. 15 and Oct. 22.

The work is part of a $1.9 billion, 16-mile project that will add a regular lane in each direction between Route 73 and the San Gabriel (605) Freeway, and another toll lane.

Orange County Transportation Authority officials say the widening will cut down on rush hour congestion, which is expected to double in the next two decades. The project is expected to be complete by 2023.
