A young woman was fatally struck by a car Thursday when she returned to a disabled vehicle to retrieve some belongings on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in the southwest Los Angeles area.
Cielo Romero Rojas, 19, of San Pedro died at the scene about 3:35 a.m. north of Normandie Avenue, according to the coroner’s office and the California Highway Patrol.
According to the CHP, Rojas was riding in a 2005 Toyota that became disabled in the Nos. 1 and 2 lanes following a crash. She and the driver got out of the car and made their way to the right shoulder of the freeway, and then went back “to recover personal items,” according to a CHP statement.
The pair were standing next to the driver’s side of the car when Rojas was struck by a 2004 Toyota driven by a 24-year-old Santa Ana woman, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, the CHP said. Her name was not released.
Anyone with information on the initial crash was urged to call the CHP South Los Angeles Area office at 424-551-4000.
