A water main break Thursday spewed thousands of gallons of water into Hollywood streets, partially submerging garages and street signs.
Just before 3 a.m. a 12-inch cast iron pipe burst in the 2200 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard — at Whitley Avenue, said Deborah Hong, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The City agency completely shut down Cahuenga between Iris Drive and Whitley Avenue.
Hong estimated the road closure could last 8-10 hours.
“We have to shut off the water,” she said. “The pipes are all located under the street.”
LADWP crews were on scene at 7 a.m. working to get the flow of water under control while they repaired the break.
“They have to excavate that portion of the street where the ruptured pipe is,” Hong said. “Then they bring in replacement pipe.”
Water had pooled at least two feet deep at Odin Street, impacting residences in the area, CBSLA reported.
Overhead video from NBC4 showed a street sign mostly under water.
Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol were asked to close the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway offramp at Highland Avenue, Hong said.
As of 7:30 a.m. the water had been shut off, she said.
