An 11-year-old boy was killed and two others, including a 9-year-old girl, were injured in a shooting in Wilmington Monday.

The shooting was initially reported as two separate attacks that occurred about eight-tenths of a mile away from one another about 4:45 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

However, authorities later determined the shooting occurred on East Denni Street near Wilmington Park Elementary School.

Authorities learned a 25-year-old woman and the boy were seated in a car in the area when they were approached by the armed suspect or suspects, who fired an unknown number of shots at them. The girl was standing on the elementary school playground and was struck by a stray bullet.

It was not immediately known what led up to the shooting.

The woman fled in her car to North Eubank Avenue near East Anaheim Street, where she and the boy were later found by authorities, police said.

The boy was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, where he later died of his wounds. His name was not released.

The woman and the 9-year-old girl were taken to a hospital, treated for their wounds and were listed in stable condition.

No suspect description was provided, and a motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

“Gun violence has destroyed too many lives in this country and tonight it has terrorized another community,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose district includes Wilmington.

“I am praying for the family of this little boy and for the recovery of the little girl and young woman.”
