A dump truck and tractor-trailer collided Wednesday on Interstate 215 in Riverside, creating a mess that prompted the California Highway Patrol to shut down lanes, resulting in a miles-long traffic jam.

The collision happened about 9:30 a.m. on the northbound 215 at Box Springs Road, according to the CHP.

The trucks impacted while crossing the Box Springs overpass, but no other details were available.

Neither driver was injured, and no other vehicles were involved, according to the CHP. Oil and other debris was flung into lanes, forcing motorists to drive around the wreck.

Riverside Fire Department crews reached the location within a few minutes and initiated efforts to mop up the oil spill.

Because of the hazardous materials and other wreckage, CHP officers closed all but one lane at the northbound 215 transition to the northbound Moreno Valley (60) Freeway.

A SigAlert was issued at 10:20 a.m. due to the ensuing traffic jam, with motorists backed up into east Moreno Valley.

Riverside County Department of Environmental Health personnel were summoned to assess the breadth of the spill and whether there was a contamination threat to storm drains.

The freeway clean-up was expected to continue into the early afternoon hours.
