The northbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Irvine was closed to traffic Tuesday evening after a man ran across the southbound lanes, crossed the center divider and was struck and killed, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down all northbound freeway lanes between MacArthur Boulevard and the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway after the fatality, which occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The shutdown was still in effect as of 9:15 p.m., with traffic backed up to Jamboree Road.

It was not immediately clear why the victim was running on the freeway.
