The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County rose a half-cent Sunday to $4.496, one day after remaining unchanged.

The average price is two-tenths of a cent more than one week ago and 9.1 cents higher than one month ago but 4.6 cents less than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. It has dropped $1.998 since rising to a record $6.494 on Oct. 5, 2022.

The Orange County average price rose one-tenth of a cent for the second consecutive day to $4.438, four-tenths of a cent less than one week ago and one year ago but 10 cents more than one year ago. It has dropped $2.021 since rising to a record $6.459 on Oct. 5, 2022.

The national average price dropped for the third consecutive day following nine increases in 10 days totaling 7 cents, decreasing four-tenths of a cent to $3.123. It dropped two-tenths of a cent Friday and six-tenths of a cent Saturday.

The national average price is three-tenths of a cent more than one week ago, 8.1 cents higher than one month ago and 2 cents greater than one year ago. It has dropped $1.893 since rising to a record $5.016 on June 14, 2022.

The higher national price comes despite easing oil costs and lackluster domestic gasoline demand, according to Andrew Gross, an AAA national public relations manager.

“The culprit for the pop in prices is likely Old Man Winter,” Gross said in a statement. “It’s a little harder to distribute gasoline in bad weather, and refineries don’t operate well in freezing temperatures either.”
