Pasadena firefighters were in the right place at the right time Saturday when the crew of Engine 38 discovered a burning supermarket and quickly put out the flames.

The fire truck was being driven about 4 p.m. Saturday past the Vallarta Market at 655 N. Fair Oaks Ave., near Orange Grove Boulevard, when the firefighters heard the fire alarm and saw people evacuating the building, according to Pasadena spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

“The crew rushed in and quickly extinguished a fire in the kitchen,” Derderian said. “The crew prevented the fire from extending into the attic causing major damage.”

The market was closed pending the outcome of an inspection by the Pasadena Public Health Department, which is standard practice, she said.
