A girl who was swept into the ocean in Laguna Beach remained missing Wednesday.
The girl was with her mother and a sibling when one of the powerful waves pounding Southern California beaches knocked the trio from the shoreline into the water near Treasure Island Beach about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Bystanders rescued the woman and one of the children but a girl described in a news story as an adolescent, remained missing.
The ongoing search for the girl was being conducted by the Laguna Beach Marine Safety Department, the Harbor Patrol of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department the U.S. Coast Guard.
Waves up to 9 feet are breaking along beaches in Orange and Los Angeles counties, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service and local agencies.
The high surf isn’t expected to subside until Thursday afternoon or evening.
An update from the department was expected early Wednesday.
