Roughly 300 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers in the Hollywood Hills spent much of the day without water service Friday due to a pair of water leaks in the same pipeline.
The first leak occurred around 1 p.m. Thursday on Wonderland Avenue west of Laurel Canyon Boulevard. That leak affected a 12-inch water main and sent water cascading down streets in the area near Wonderland Avenue Elementary School, although no major damage was reported.
DWP crews responded and initially restored water service in the area around 2:30 a.m. Friday, according to the utility. While crews were working to repair the street, however, a second leak was discovered just a few feet away from the initial break.
That break left roughly 300 customers without water service. According to the DWP, repairs to the second leak were completed around 2 p.m. Friday, and all service was restored.
Wonderland Avenue remained closed between North Vado Drive and North Laurel Pass Avenue, but the street was expected to reopen sometime Friday night, according to DWP.
DWP officials said the affected pipeline was installed in 1959 and has experienced two other leaks over the past 21 years. Due to the back-to-back leaks this week, however, the utility will be evaluating the pipe to set a timeline for replacement.
