A brush fire erupted Friday afternoon on a hillside just west of Murrieta, quickly scorching two acres and moving toward homes before crews reached the location.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 4:10 p.m. in the area of De Luz and John Wayne roads, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Murrieta Fire Department crews arrived first and encountered flames moving downhill, in the direction of several residences. County fire personnel reached the area minutes later and began establishing protective lines to contend with the head of the blaze.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were summoned but got held up because of a separate blaze that started less than a mile northeast of Lake Skinner, within the Indian Oaks Campground, near Winchester.

That fire blackened about five acres before the air crews got it partially contained following several runs, according to reports from the scene.

No evacuations were pending at the fire along De Luz Road. There was no word on what might have triggered it.
