A fire that erupted Wednesday in a debris pile near Homeland spread to vegetation, burning a half-acre and damaging two vehicles before firefighters gained the upper hand.
The blaze was reported at 1:25 p.m. just north of Highway 74, along Juniper Flats Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location but encountered challenges finding the best dirt road to reach the fire, according to reports from the scene.
A Cal Fire water-dropping helicopter and air tanker made runs on the blaze, slowing it down until ground crews could establish tentative containment lines.
Officials said two vehicles adjacent to the rubbish pile were damaged, but a nearby home was not.
The fire’s forward rate of spread was halted at 1:50 p.m.
There was no word on what caused the blaze.
