A vehicle tumbled approximately 400 feet over the side of state Route 74 Wednesday near Vista Point, east of Palm Desert, causing the highway to be temporary closed while firefighters worked to free the motorist inside the vehicle.
The Riverside County Fire Department received a report of the accident at 1:32 p.m. and arrived to find the vehicle off the side of the cliff with one person inside. The person was eventually pulled from the wreckage and taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, fire officials said.
State Route 74 was reopened at about 4:45 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
