Six-time PGA tour winner Jon Rahm, the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, will play in the upcoming American Express tournament in La Quinta, it was announced Wednesday.

The 2022 tournament, scheduled for Jan. 20-23, will feature 156 professionals and 156 amateur golfers playing a round each at PGA West’s Stadium Course, Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club.

This year will mark Rahm’s fourth appearance at the tournament, which he won in 2018.

“There is no better boost to our player field than to welcome the world’s top-ranked golfer to the Coachella Valley,” said Pat McCabe, the tournament’s executive director. “We are thrilled to have Jon return as a past tournament champ and help shape what will be an all-around, first-class event.”

The tournament also received commitments from five-time PGA Tour winner Rickie Fowler — a native of Murrieta in Riverside County — and 2021 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris.

Since its inception in 1960 as the Palm Springs Golf Classic — later known for many years as the Bob Hope Desert Classic — the PGA event has generated more than $63 million for non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting Coachella Valley residents, according to officials.
