A gas line was punctured in a Riverside neighborhood Thursday, prompting evacuations and shelter-in-place orders until the leak was repaired.
The 3-inch diameter gas main was damaged about 8:30 a.m. in the 7800 block of Evans Street, near Jefferson Street, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Capt. Eric Wilmer said a utility crew was performing underground maintenance when it inadvertently ruptured the unmarked line.
Two engine crews and a truck company were sent to the location, and firefighters initiated an evacuation of surrounding residences as a safety precaution, resulting in 20 people being temporarily displaced, Wilmer said.
He said other residents were asked to remain indoors while technicians from SoCal Gas made repairs.
As of 11:30 a.m., the line had been secured, and residents were returning to their properties.
No injuries were reported.
