An equipment malfunction in the Riverside County sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station Wednesday triggered a fire alarm and caused smoke to waft through part of the building, prompting immediate evacuations.

The alarm went off just after 2 p.m. at 7477 Mission Blvd., just south of the Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Engine crews from the adjacent fire station and several other stations were sent to the location and initiated an investigation to isolate the point of origin of the smoke.

A broken valve, possibly connected to the HVAC system, was ultimately identified as the source, according to reports from the scene.

Firefighters secured the equipment, and the station evacuation order was lifted a short time later.
