A stretch of the Colorado River south of Interstate 10 along the Arizona border will be closed to all boating traffic until early next week as Ten West Corporation installs power lines crossing the river.

The installation work began Tuesday and is expected to continue each day from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Jan. 30, according to Sgt. Bryan Berryman of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. He said the new lines are part of a solar power project between Arizona and California.

As the power lines are installed, approximately five miles south of Interstate 10, a closure will be in effect for boats in the area due to safety concerns, Berryman said.

“Deputies from Riverside and La Paz Counties will be onsite to enforce this closure,” Berryman wrote in a statement. “The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Colorado River Station is dedicated to the safety of our community and wants to ensure that everyone on our waterways have a safe and enjoyable experience.”

River traffic is set to resume as normal at the conclusion of the project, according to Berryman. People with boating-related questions can call Berryman at 760-921-7900.
