A hiker suffered an injury that immobilized him on a trail in the Cleveland National Forest south of Corona Friday, prompting fire crews to mount a rescue operation.

The “hiker down” call was received at 1:25 p.m. Friday along the Skyline Trail, roughly a mile into the forest, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that crews from the county and Corona Fire Department initiated a search and rescue, with firefighters hiking into the federal preserve shortly before 2 p.m.

It was unclear whether a Cal Fire helicopter might be enlisted to assist in the search due to limited visibility around the mountains.

Officials said that the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, reported suffering an injury to the lower extremities.

As of 2:15 p.m., the search was still underway.
