A senior was killed and two other seniors seriously injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 15 in Wildomar, authorities said Monday.
Maria Martinez Lomeli, 74, of Mexico was fatally injured about 1:50 p.m. Sunday on southbound I-15, near Diamond Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Mike Lassig said Lomeli was the rear seat passenger in a 2004 Kia Sorento traveling about 65 mph in the freeway’s No. 2 lane when the driver, identified only as a 71-year-old Compton man, lost control.
“The vehicle veered into the center median of southbound I-15 and overturned, causing (Lomeli) to be ejected,” Lassig said. “The Kia came to rest in the center divider, on its wheels.”
No other vehicles were involved.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location minutes later and found Lomeli in grave condition. She was taken to nearby Inland Valley Medical Center, where she died less than a half-hour later.
The Kia driver and his 66-year-old front-seat passenger, identified only as a Compton woman, were taken to the same facility for treatment of major injuries, Lassig said.
They were in stable condition Monday.
Lassig said Lomeli was not wearing a safety restraint.
An investigation into the crash was ongoing.
