Work will commence on a new “streetscape improvement initiative” along Jackson Street Monday, the City of Indio announced.

Dubbed the “Jackson Street Shadowalk Project,” the initiative is intended to “enhance and beautify public spaces, reduce waste and debris, and improve areas for walking and recreation,” according to a city statement.

Features of the initiative include comprehensive repairs, sidewalk replacements and installing structures designed by Indio-based teenagers. The structures will provide 11,000 feet of shade between Kenner Avenue and Avenue 45, the city said.

An investment of more than $5.3 million, the majority of which is coming through Caltrans’ Clean California Local Grant Program, is financing the project. The remaining amount was provided by Local Measure A funds.

The construction phase of the project is expected to be completed in approximately seven weeks, the city said, beginning at the intersection of Jackson Street and Avenue 44. Lane closures and traffic delays could occur during installation periods from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Following that seven-week period, the installation of shade structures will begin in early October.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
