A vehicle plunged down a steep embankment Thursday in Woodcrest, leaving the motorist trapped, requiring firefighters to mount a rescue operation.

The crash was reported about 11 a.m. in the area of Laurel and Canyon Ridge drives, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said crews reached the location a short time later and found the car at the bottom of a roughly 200-foot embankment.

The driver, whose identity was not disclosed, was reportedly injured, and firefighters requested assistance from a sheriff’s STAR-9 helicopter crew to perform a hoist rescue.

As of noon, the chopper was en route to the location.

Sheriff’s deputies were handling the investigation into the cause of the crash.
