The Imperial Irrigation District’s Board of Directors Tuesday approved a power rate update that IID officials said would improve service standards and create infrastructure benefits.
The board also unanimously approved $10 million for ratepayer assistance and energy efficiency programs aimed at lowering customer bills, according to an IID statement.
“Today’s decision is a critical step in securing a stronger and more resilient future for IID and the communities we serve,” said IID Board Chair Gina Dockstader. “This rate update enables us to make much-needed investments in our infrastructure to continue delivering reliable and affordable power while meeting evolving state and federal requirements.”
Tuesday’s announcement marks the IID’s first rate adjustment in nine years, with officials saying it was a reaction to increased costs of modernization and maintenance of the district’s electrical system.
IID officials said they provided channels for public input at stages in the decision-making process, such as community meetings, newsletters and a website portal.
“We greatly appreciate the valuable feedback from our community throughout this process,” said IID General Manager Jamie Asbury in a statement. “As we move forward with implementation, we remain committed to ongoing dialogue and ensuring that customers understand the benefits of these critical infrastructure investments.”
The utility provides electricity to more than 150,000 customers in parts of Riverside and San Diego counties, as well as all of Imperial County.
