A fire that broke out in a house on the west end of Riverside caused major damage to the property, displacing the occupants, one of whom was injured, officials said Monday.

The blaze was reported just before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 10200 block of Mull Avenue, near Tomlinson Avenue, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst said that three engine crews and a truck company, numbering 17 personnel, were sent to the location and encountered flames raging inside the single-story house.

“All residents had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival,” Vanderhorst said. “One resident (suffered) smoke inhalation but did not require transport to the hospital.”

The victim’s identity was not disclosed.

Vanderhorst said that crews waged an “aggressive interior attack,” knocking down the flames within 20 minutes.

An investigation revealed that the origin of the blaze was a back bedroom and likely the result of an electrical malfunction in an appliance, according to the fire department spokesman.

The estimated property loss was $200,000. The structure was uninhabitable as a result of the damage.

Red Cross personnel were summoned to assist the four occupants with finding temporary alternate lodgings.
