The Imperial Irrigation District has issued an energy conversation alert Wednesday due to an extreme heat warning in the Coachella Valley.
The alert will run from Wednesday until Friday due to the dangerously high temperatures. IID customers were urged to reduce energy consumption during the hours of 4-9 p.m. in order to avoid any power outages.
IID issues conserve alerts when electrical demand is high, which generally occurs as more homes make use of air conditioning during heat waves. The alert from the utility coincides with an extreme heat warning from the National Weather Service, which is scheduled to last through 8 p.m. Saturday for the cities of Indio, Coachella, Cathedral City, La Quinta, Palm Desert and Palm Springs.
Officials highlight a few ways to conserve energy including avoiding using major appliances like washers, dishwashers and charging electric vehicles, set thermostats at 78 degrees or higher when home, to turn off all unnecessary lights, use floor or ceiling fans to cool off and to use shades or blinds to block the sun inside a residence.
IID provides electricity to Coachella, Indio, La Quinta, Bermuda Dunes, Thousand Palms, Indio Hills, Sky Valley, Mecca, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells, according to IID website.
