A 41-year-old man was struck and killed while walking along Highway 79 in Winchester, authorities said Friday.

Corey Burnham of Hemet was fatally injured shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday on the northbound 79, just south of Stetson Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Sgt. Jonathan Torres told City News Service a 21-year-old man at the wheel of a Honda Accord was unable to swerve or stop when he encountered Burnham, hitting him on the two-lane corridor.

“It’s still unknown at this time whether the pedestrian was in lanes, trying to cross, on the shoulder, or exactly where the impact occurred,” Torres said.

The motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, immediately stopped and called 911.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived minutes later and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The driver, who was not injured, was questioned by officers but not arrested.

“Alcohol or drugs don’t appear to be factors,” Torres said. “Speed also doesn’t appear to be a factor.”

An autopsy on Burnham was pending Friday.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP’s San Gorgonio office at 951-846-5300.
