Several cities across the Coachella Valley will hold ceremonies Thursday to honor the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The Palm Springs Fire Department will host its annual “Never Forget 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony” at 8:30 a.m. at Fire Station 2, 300 N. El Cielo Road. City officials said attendees were encouraged to arrive by 8:15 a.m., and coffee and doughnuts will be provided after the ceremony at 9 a.m.

In Indio, a remembrance and a groundbreaking ceremony for a 9/11 Memorial will take place at 9 a.m. at Miles Avenue Park, 82540 Miles Ave.

“This year’s ceremony is made even more meaningful as we break ground on Indio’s 9/11 Memorial, a place where our community can come together to remember, to learn and to honor the bravery of those who served and sacrificed. We hope it will inspire future generations to carry forward the values of resilience and solidarity,” Mayor Glen Miller said in a statement.

The memorial project will be a 12-foot-tall steel artifact from the former World Trade Center in New York that will serve as a place for reflection and education.

In La Quinta, a candlelight vigil is set at 7 p.m. at Civic Center Campus, 78495 Calle Tampico.
