The Power in Nature Coalition Friday highlighted seven projects tied to California’s pledge to conserve 30% of its lands and coastal waters by 2030, including the Prescott Preserve in Palm Springs.
The Wildlife Conservation Board awarded a $3.48 million grant to Oswit Land Trust to restore 75 acres of the Prescott Preserve.
The Prescott Preserve restoration project, which is owned by Oswit Land Trust, will attempt to “reestablish connected habitats for native wildlife and bring the preserve back to its original native desert ecosystem” at the 120-acre defunct golf course, officials said.
“The preserve has also been an essential addition within the Coachella Valley for increasing access to nature for all and the restorations funds will ensure that all residents can appreciate the beauty of the desert,” Bettina Rosmarino, Land Acquisition Director of Oswit Land Trust, said in a statement.
Power in Nature Coalition comprises of nearly 300 environment and conservation groups, community groups, land trusts, Indigenous organizations and Tribal members dedicated to advance habitat conservation, climate resilience and other issues within the state.
In 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation making California’s 30×30 conservation initiative state law.
“The Wildlife Conservation Board is proud to play a leading role in advancing California’s 30×30 commitment,” Jennifer Norris, executive director of the Wildlife Conservation Board, said in a statement.
“Protecting biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and expanding access to nature are at the heart of WCB’s mission and strategic plan. By funding projects like these, we are ensuring that California’s lands and water will continue to sustain wildlife and people for generations to come.”
