America’s fighting men and women will be honored next week during Murrieta’s 23rd annual “Veterans Day Parade,” featuring marching bands, representatives from all service branches, public safety personnel and civic leaders.
The event is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 near the intersection of Ivy Street and Washington Avenue, rolling through the historic downtown area along Washington to Town Square Park, where the “Field of Honor” will be on display at Adams Avenue and Kalmia Street.
High school marching bands will participate in the event, along with veterans groups, personnel from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy, law enforcement and firefighters, joined by Mayor Cindy Warren and others from the city, as well as officials from Riverside County.
Ceremonies will conclude at the Field of Honor, sponsored by the Murrieta Rotary Club.
The site is established every November as a memorial to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Services, and a salute to those who have completed their service or remain on active duty.
“The Field features sections for `Medal of Honor’ recipients, `Local Heroes’ — those from Riverside and San Bernardino counties who have given their lives for this country since 2003 — historical flags, one flag dedicated to those who perished in 9/11, and state flags,” according to the Rotary.
The tribute is in its 17th year, and over 2,000 3-by-5-foot American flags will be on display until the end of the next week, thanks to donations generated by the Rotary. There will additionally be chalk art work around the field emphasizing the contributions provided by service members, their families and others during wartime.
“The Murrieta Field of Honor is dedicated to honoring and celebrating the service and sacrifices of our military, first responders and other heroes,” the Rotary stated.
