A windblown dust advisory remained in effect Friday in the Coachella Valley after the South Coast Air Quality Management District extended it through Saturday morning because of blowing dust and strong winds.

The advisory will be in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday due to air quality levels reaching “hazardous” in northern Cathedral City and Mecca and “unhealthy” in Indio, officials said.

Gusty winds of up to 55 mph were expected to cause periods of elevated particle pollution, with the highest impacts expected in the northwest Coachella Valley.

The public was advised to limit exposure outdoors, avoid vigorous physical activity, run air conditioning or an air purifier and to slow down while driving on dirt roads.

Current air quality conditions by region are available at aqmd.gov/AQImap.
