Light heavyweight Jonathan Esquivel of Anaheim lost a split-decision to Erdenebayar Sandagsuren of Mongolia in his second-round bout in the World Olympic Qualifying Event in Baku, Azerbaijan, but will have one more chance to qualify for the Rio Games.
All three judges scored the bout 29-28, with Roland Juhasz of Hungary and Siarhei Asanau of Belarus favoring Sandagsuren and Yasar Cinar of Turkey favoring Esquivel Sunday.
Esquivel needed to finish in the top five in the field of 43 light- heavyweights to qualify for the Olympics. His last chance to qualify will come July 3-8 in Vargas, Venezuela.
Esquivel defeated Mohammad Alyazouri of Jordan on a unanimous decision in his first-round bout Friday, with all three judges scoring the fight 30-27.
