In what may be a final blow to the pennant hopes of the Los Angeles Angels, star outfielder Mike Trout could be sidelined for up to eight weeks due to a torn ligament in his left thumb, according to reports.

He has been placed on the disabled list for the first time in his pro baseball career, which began in 2011. According to Angels general manager Billy Eppler, surgery is still being considered.

The Angels tweeted out Sunday that Trout had been diagnosed with a left “thumb sprain” but X-rays were negative for any fracture. The injury happened that day when Trout did a headfirst slide to steal second base during a game at the Miami Marlins.

Trout is a two-time AL MVP and at just 25 years old is currently hitting .337 with 16 home runs this season, the second most in the majors.
