A 6-year-old mare with six career races has died after suffering a sudden medical emergency in the starting gate at Los Alamitos Race Course, officials said Monday.
“The 6-year-old mare Kimberly’s Devil collapsed while being loaded into the gate for the third race Saturday night at Los Alamitos, deemed a sudden death,” California Horse Racing Board spokesman Mike Marten told City News Service on Monday.
Kimberly’s Devil is the second horse to die from a racing or training-related injury in 2025, with two others dying from “other” causes, according to CHRB records.
The Cypress track saw 18 horses die from racing or training injuries in 2024.
