The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic continues into its second day Friday, featuring 31 of the nation’s top NCAA softball teams.
Among the field at the four-day event are several ranked teams, including No. 4 UCLA (11-1), No. 7 Tennessee (11-2) and No. 10 Arkansas (12-0).
The Bruins are not the only in-state school at the event — California (6-4), Fresno State (5-4), UC Riverside (7-7), San Diego State (8-2), San Jose State (5-5), Saint Mary’s (2-6), UC Santa Barbara (8-3), Long Beach State (4-4), Loyola Marymount (3-8), Cal State Northridge (3-8) and Cal State Fullerton (10-4) have also made the trip to the desert for the 21st annual tournament.
Day two’s schedule contains 25 games at the Big League Dreams Complex in Cathedral City, highlighted by a 6:30 p.m. clash between the Bruins and Lady Volunteers. No. 14 Duke (8-3) and No. 15 Nebraska (9-3) are also facing off — the teams shared the diamond for the first time ever last year in Mexico, which the Blue Devils emerging as 6-1 victors.
Thursday’s schedule featured some notable upsets, including Tennessee’s 1-0 loss to No. 19 Oregon. The Ducks snapped their opponents’ 10-game win streak Thursday, extending their own run to seven victories in a row.
