A mudslide Wednesday morning closed a stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard through the Santa Monica Mountains, a day after heavy rains also made parts of the winding road impassable for a time.

The closure, in effect from Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Drive, was reported by Caltrans at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The slide was at mile marker 1.2, Caltrans reported.

“The closure is to protect the public from serious injuries and fatalities,” according to a Caltrans statement.

Access will be maintained for work crews.

“This stretch of SR-27 (Topanga Canyon Boulevard) is an active work zone for ongoing recovery efforts from the Palisades Fire and winter storms,” the statement read. “It is currently closed to the public from midnight to 5 a.m. daily. Crews took precautions Monday to prepare for the storm by moving equipment, placing k-rail and sandbags and stabilizing current retaining wall and other project work … as well as Pacific Coast Highway recovery projects following the Palisades Fire and storms. ”

Motorists were advised to take alternate routes and expect delays.
