Two big rigs collided Tuesday on the Ventura (101) Freeway scattering large bricks all over northbound lanes through Tarzana and leaving only one lane passable.

The crash was reported at 4:10 a.m. Tuesday on the northbound Ventura Freeway just south of the Tampa Avenue off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The impact caused the 53-foot-long big rig with a flatbed trailer to overturn, as seen on video from the scene. The semi with a trailer was damaged in the front.

An arriving officer reported that the driver was out of the overturned rig and appeared to have only minor injuries. He was seen on video with his head wrapped in bandages.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 4:27 a.m. shutting down all northbound lanes except the far-right just south of Tampa Avenue while arranging for two heavy duty tow trucks to collect the big rigs, including the one on its side.

The CHP also called for Caltrans to set up a hard closure for the time it would take to pick up all of the cinder blocks.

  1. Doesn’t the Ventura Freeway run East and West. I know it ends up North further up, but isn’t it considered East and West in the valley.
