Riverside County health officials turned Monday to the public for help identifying a man who cannot or will not speak and may be suffering from some form of amnesia.
The roughly 30-year-old man has been under the care of staff at the Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley since the morning of April 21. He was brought to the hospital after being found that day apparently dazed and confused, unable or unwilling to speak, according to a Riverside University Health System statement.
Officials said the patient gained the attention of concerned passers-by when he was spotted standing at the corner of Fir Street and Perris Boulevard, allowing the landscaping sprinkler system to drench him. Sheriff’s deputies were notified.
The patient is black, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 161 pounds. He was wearing a light gray long-sleeved shirt, a darker zippered sweat shirt with a hood, blue denim pants and sandals when found.
When he was picked up by an ambulance crew, he did not speak, and since being admitted to the hospital, the patient has not said a word.
“He is well groomed and well nourished,” according to the RUHS statement. “He interacts with his caregivers but is nonverbal and cannot provide any information about himself.”
Officials declined to offer theories on his condition based on federal and state privacy safeguards.
Anyone with information was asked to call the Riverside County sheriff’s Missing Person hotline at 951-486-6731.
