At least one person was seriously injured when a vehicle left the roadway and overturned on Interstate 10 about 15 miles east of Indio Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported just before 6 a.m. on the eastbound side of the freeway near the Cactus City Rest Area, the CHP said.

Riverside County firefighters had to extract the occupants from the vehicle, which ended up on its roof, and at least one person suffered major injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital, according to the CHP.

The exact number of people injured and the cause of the crash were not immediately known.
