A 63-year-old motorist killed when his SUV drifted off of Interstate 15 and overturned onto a city street was identified Wednesday.

The crash occurred at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the I-15 and Bundy Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Mike Lassig said the driver, identified as Michael Carter of Wildomar, was headed south on I-15 in the slow lane when his 2017 Toyota Highlander veered to the right, crossed the shoulder of the freeway and then plunged down an embankment leading to Bundy Canyon Road.

“The vehicle traveled down the embankment and began to roll over,” Lassig said. “The vehicle rolled over onto Bundy Canyon before coming to a stop in the eastbound traffic lanes.”

No other vehicles were involved.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within a few minutes and pronounced Carter dead at the scene.

Lassig said that Bundy Canyon was partially closed while the wreckage was cleared and officers conducted a preliminary invesytigation. The closure was lifted after several hours.
