Three COVID-19 Cases Reported at Desert AIDS Clinic

Three patients from the Desert AIDS Project COVID-19 clinic in Palm Springs tested positive for the respiratory virus and are self-quarantining Saturday, an official said.

Two of the patients are older than 55 and the third patient, who had recently traveled internationally, is older than 30 years old, according to Desert AIDS Project director of community development Steven Henke.

On Friday afternoon, Riverside County health officials updated the number of cases countywide to 28. The new number includes three more cases in the Coachella Valley, one in the western county and two more in southwest Riverside County, said Jose Arballo, spokesman for the Riverside University Health System.

However, it’s unclear if the patients from the DAP clinic were included in that figure.

“All three cases are mild and the patients are choosing to self-quarantine at home,” Henke said Friday night. “DAP has put safeguards in place to protect non-infected people from COVID-19 while they are on the DAP campus. This includes heavily restricting exits and entrances to the COVID-19 Clinic and controlling pedestrian flow. Clients receiving care are monitored by staff while they are onsite, and anyone entering DAP buildings is screened for symptoms and given masks when appropriate.”

On Friday, health officials also confirmed a fourth coronavirus death in the county, all in the Coachella Valley.
