A vegetation fire in Riverside blackened four acres and burned for nearly three hours Tuesday, but caused no damage to nearby homes.

Firefighters responded to the 5500 block of Mitchell Avenue, near La Sierra Avenue, at 3:40 p.m. and found a fast-moving grass fire on the side of a hill threatening homes, according to Incident Commander Scott Wilson of the Riverside Fire Department.

A total of 19 firefighters were able to keep the flames from causing damage to the houses and the fire was fully contained about 6:30 p.m., Wilson said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
