A wildfire that broke out in a canyon north of Moreno Valley was partially contained this evening after scorching 15 acres.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 4 p.m. along Redlands Boulevard, roughly two miles south of San Timoteo Canyon Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

More than a dozen engine crews and five hand crews — numbering over 100 personnel — were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate to the northeast through heavy vegetation.

Five Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters were summoned and made a series of runs on the fire, slowing it to the point that crews were able to make steady progress building containment lines.

Firefighters stopped the fire’s spread by 7 p.m., and containment was reported at 20%. Full containment was expected before midnight, according to reports from the scene.

No homes or other structures were immediately threatened. However, sheriff’s deputies closed Redlands Boulevard between San Timoteo and Ironwood Avenue to the south for public safety.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
