A brush fire sparked Thursday afternoon by a vehicle fire in the San Jacinto Mountains near Palm Spring blackened about 500 acres within 2 1/2 hours and was burning at a “critical” rate of spread.
The blaze was reported about 2:40 p.m. in the 15000 block of Snow Creek Road and was 0% contained as of 5:30 p.m., according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Nearly 120 firefighters were assigned to the firefight from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. They were being assisted by four Cal Fire aircraft and two water-dropping helicopters.
The CHP reported that a work truck caught fire, which spread to nearby vegetation. The CHP also said the brush fire was nearing a structure with a propane tank, and that high winds were advancing the flames.
No evacuations had been ordered as of 5:30 p.m.
