Multiple lanes on both sides of the Pomona (60) Freeway between Riverside and Ontario will be closed during the overnight hours next week for the “60 Swarm” resurfacing and bridge replacement project.
The first closures are scheduled from 8 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, when two of four lanes on the westbound and eastbound sides of the 60 between the 60/91/215 interchange and Valley Way will be taken out of service, along with three of five lanes on the westbound and eastbound 60 from Country Village Road to Euclid Avenue, according to Caltrans.
The agency said the closures are slated to be repeated during the same hours Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, Wednesday night to Thursday morning and Thursday night to Friday morning.
Officials said the closures are necessary for crews to expedite pavement replacement work.
Motorists were advised to expect travel delays along a roughly 17-mile stretch of the corridor. Alternate routes include Interstate 15 via the Riverside (91) Freeway and Interstate 10 via Interstate 215.
The 60 Swarm got underway in July 2019, and since then, lane shutdowns have been a regular occurrence from Chino to the 60/91/215.
The work has resulted in traffic backups spanning several miles even in the middle of the night, and is a central part of the project, which altogether covers a 20-mile space.
The other part of the project is comprised of bridge replacements, costing $23 million. Chino’s Benson, Monte Vista and Pipeline avenues overcrossings are being replaced with new spans. Alternating eastbound and westbound lane closures for the bridge work started over a year ago.
Most of the overnight lane closures related to the bridge replacements are occurring between Ramona Avenue and Reservoir Street in Chino.
